9 UEW students perish in road accident at Asuboi

After being involved in an accident on Sunday, nine students from the University of Education in Winneba were confirmed dead, while numerous others were injured.

A Hyundai Universe commercial bus was involved in the collision, which occurred on the Accra-Kumasi route in Asuboi, a neighborhood of Suhum.

After the bus they were riding from Sunyani to Accra collided with a stationary articulated truck, the incident occurred.

Because he was apparently sleeping, the driver of the bus with the registration number AK324-22 is said to have broken traffic laws.

The impact of the crash caused a 40-footer truck filled with wood to fall onto the road, killing eight people instantaneously.

DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, said the police had initiated an inquiry into the incident.

The deceased have been put to the Suhum Government Hospital mortuary, according to him, while the injured are being treated at the same location.

“On-the-spot investigations at the section of the accident spot at Asuboi on the Accra-Kumasi dual carriage road, indicated that the driver of the said commercial bus failed to observe traffic ahead whilst he was allegedly sleeping.

“In the process, he crashed into a 40-footer container loaded with wood which fell partially on the road as a result of a previous accident. The passengers who sustained the injuries have been transported to the Suhum Government Hospital and are receiving treatment whilst the dead have been deposited at the Suhum Government Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy,” he told JoyNews in an interview.
