Despite the Wolves winger appeared close to signing for Tottenham, Adama Traore has joined Barcelona on loan until the end of the season.
Traore was a product of Barcelona’s youth system before moving to Aston Villa in 2015, and he will now be back at Camp Nou for the next few months.
The Catalan giants have the option to extend the contract at the conclusion of the season for a cost of €34.8 million (£29 million). They’ll also pay the player’s salary.
Tottenham appeared to be on the verge of signing the 26-year-old before Barca stepped in, with Traore’s preferred destination being his native Spain.
Traore’s current contract at Molineux expires at the end of next season, and Wolves were expecting to cash in on him during the January transfer window, despite the Spain international’s refusal to sign a new term.
He has only one goal and zero assists in 20 Premier League appearances this season, albeit only starting ten of them, and might be a substitute for Ousmane Dembele, who Barca continue to say will leave the club before the end of the January transfer window owing to his own contract dispute.
Traore has tried 117 dribbles in all competitions this season, with a success rate of 76.9%, far more than any other wide forward at Barcelona who has attempted more than 18 dribbles. Next best is Memphis Depay, who has completed 52.8 percent of his 89 take-on tries, while Dembele has accomplished 49 percent of his 51 take-on attempts.
Only Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin (154) and Leeds United’s Raphinha (112) have tried more dribbles in the Premier League this season than Traore (105), although the latter’s 79.1% success rate in that competition considerably outnumbers Saint-59.1 Maximin’s and Raphinha’s 40.2.
