Chelsea took control of their Champions League last-16 tie against Lille thanks to goals from Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic, but Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech were injured.
Despite the fact that Romelu Lukaku was relegated on the bench following a poor performance against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Chelsea just took eight minutes to score via Havertz.
In-form duo Kovacic and Ziyech were forced to leave the game before the hour mark, putting their prospects of appearing in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday in jeopardy.
After 63 minutes, Pulisic finished off a fast break to give Thomas Tuchel’s team a big first-leg lead, with the return leg taking place in France next month.
After missing a number of early chances, Havertz wasted no time in establishing himself as the center striker, tapping home from Ziyech’s corner.
As Lille began to gain a foothold in the game, Antonio Rudiger almost turned a Renato Sanches cross into his own net, and Lille threatened with a flurry of chances from the subsequent corner.
Chelsea suffered a setback when Kovacic and Ziyech were both sent off in short succession early in the second half, but they extended their lead in the 63rd minute.
N’Golo Kante drove forward from deep inside Chelsea’s half, feeding Pulisic for a lovely dink over the onrushing Leo Jardim and into the bottom-right corner.
Lille made a late push for a goal, but Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy was never truly tested, and the tie remained in Chelsea’s hands.
