Four alleged armed robbers killed by gunfire from Ashanti Region police

Four alleged highway robbers were shot and killed by the Ashanti Regional Police Command at Asumegya in the Asante Bekwai District.

Kofi Frimpong, an assemblyman who represents the area, tells Luv News that the alleged robbers attempted to loot motorists on that stretch of road before early on Wednesday by setting up a roadblock between Bekwai and Fomena.

He claimed that they were pursued by police to a primary school in Asumegya, where a shootout took place.

One of the suspects, according to Mr. Frimpong, was able to get away and is currently evading capture.

“It is believed they entered the school to find a haven. Unfortunately for them, the police could figure them out. A gun battle ensued between them and the police, which led to the death of four of them”, he explained.

Residents claim that over the years, the police have found it difficult to combat highway robbery in the region.

Between Asante Bekwai and Anwia Nkanta in February 2020, 17 travelers traveling from Elubo in the Western Region were robbed under gunpoint.

There were no recorded casualties, but the victims had their money and other goods stolen.

While police continue their hunt for the culprit who escaped, locals from nearby communities have joined them.

The event has not yet been officially reported by the police.
