The 50-year-old actress has a message for her fans, three days after her husband, Will Smith, reportedly approached Chris Rock live onstage at the 2022 Oscars, smacking him in the face over a joke the comedian made about Jada’s shaved head.
“This is a season for healing,” her post on Instagram read, “and I’m here for it.”
Though Jada didn’t go into details with her post, ET reports that, Jada “was glad that Will stood up for her” and that she “was hurt by Chris’ remark.”
“Chris has also made jokes about Jada in the past,” the source noted, “which added to her feeling upset. Will does not regret sticking up for Jada, but he does have remorse for how he went about it. He acted out of impulse.”
The Oscar winner apologized for his behavior in a statement issued Monday night, telling the public, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.”
“My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally,” the King Richard star explained, referencing Jada’s struggle with alopecia.
The 53-year-old actor then issued a direct apology to Chris, something he did not do when accepting the Oscar for Best Actor from the crowd at the Academy Awards.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris,” he wrote. “I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
Will went on to apologize to the Academy, as well as producers, attendees, fans, those involved with his film, and the Williams family, who are the inspiration for King Richard. “I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us,” he concluded. “I am a work in progress.”
While the movie actor has expressed his sorrow, it does not appear that his apology to Chris has made things better between them. According to ET, Chris and Will have not reconciled their differences.
Meanwhile, another source tells ET that removing Will from the Oscars after the slap was discussed, but the choice was difficult to make during the live event due to the chaos.
