Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be another feather in the cap of Marvel Studios, and could round out the MCU’s Phase Four in style.

When Black Panther debuted back in 2018, it brought a different kind of Marvel movie to the world. As well as becoming one of the highest-rated projects in the MCU and one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, the film also managed to do the impossible by gaining a number of Oscar nominations in big categories.

Now, Marvel is returning to Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and according to one Marvel executive, the movie is similar to The Godfather in a number of ways.

There is very little currently known about the exact plot of the sequel, but there has been plenty of images and hints in the trailer to suggest that film will be another monster hit for Marvel Studios and could manage to end Phase Four with the biggest hit of the last two years.

Picking up the story after the events of Avengers: Endgamethe movie will introduce Namor to the MCU and will also have the emotional core of dealing with the death of T’Challa, and in turn, the passing of actor Chadwick Boseman. When it comes to the disagreement between Wakanda and the underwater kingdom Talocan, Marvel exec Nate Moore says that the film’s story has a feel of The Godfather about it. He told Total Film:

“This sounds crazy but I’m going to say it. There’s a little bit of a mob movie to this. There’s a little bit of… The Godfather… sounds like I’m being insane, but… There’s that feeling of families of war. Because this movie is very much about Wakanda finding an equal to itself, and Namor’s world of Talocan. But these two isolationist nations that are incredibly powerful – probably more powerful than any other nations in the world – [are] figuring out how they can both co-exist. The film is very much about Wakanda opening up its borders to some degree, and impacting Namor’s world in a way that’s unexpected. Namor kind of comes to Wakanda with a proposal that’s not unlike, you know, one of the five families coming with a proposal. And Wakanda is having to figure out how to negotiate with this world power that isn’t afraid of it, frankly.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Will Bring a New War to the MCU

The trailers for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever have shown the conflicting storylines that will encompass the main part of the movie. That is the mourning of the loss of T’Challa and the war that is about to erupt between Wakanda and the underwater kingdom of Talocan.

While there is not much more detail known on the plot, we do know that the introduction of Namor brings another mutant into the MCU, and the film will also see the first appearance of Riri Williams, aka Ironheart.

The MCU has come under a lot of criticism during Phase Four, but as Kevin Feige has explained on a number of occasions, the purpose of the phase was to take a breather after the events of Endgame, catching up on all the characters who were impacted by the Snap, the Blip and the death of Tony Stark. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be the closing chapter in this story, and a new one will really kick off next year as Phase Five takes us deeper into the Multiverse Saga.
