Save Ghana ¢ 6 billion each year by reducing the number of ministers to 40: – IMANI Africa to government.

IMANI Africa, a policy think group, is requesting that there be no more than 40 ministers.

Franklin Cudjoe, President of IMANI Africa, stated in an interview with JoyNews that the decision will save the economy an estimated $6 billion yearly.

In dramatic contrast to the 126 cabinet appointments that characterized Akufo-first Addo’s time in power, the current administration has 86 ministers.

Mr. Cudjoe believes that this is insufficient to safeguard the public purse, though.

When public officials fail to show up for work, he claims that nothing significant will change.

“In the far advanced countries, when the President falls sick, you see the effects immediately, the stock prices change.  When many public servants really did not work, except for those who work in the hospitals or maybe public institutions that are very critical, you probably did not see.

“A lot of them really, if they were not at work, I don’t think there will be any significant difference in the nature of the economy. We will only see the impact dramatically.”

He added that “it’s the same way for our ministries, there are too many of them, there are too many ministries that could be collapsed into fit-sized ministries and just have agency heads that could do the work.

“If we did that, we would have saved this economy at least in this critical time, ¢6 billion,” he assured.

A group of Ghanaians has urged President AkufoAddo to think about lowering the number of ministers of state in light of the country’s present economic predicament.

Others have asked for a reshuffle, adding that the nomination of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta should be revoked. These individuals include economists, political analysts, and the opposition National Democratic Congress.

President Akufo-Addo, however, insists that the various development sectors are being managed by qualified individuals.

He believed that those clamoring for a reshuffle were unemployed people trying to topple his administration.
